By supply chain (agro-food, industrial, technological) we mean, in a broad sense, the complex set (also called ‘network’ or ‘system’) that includes the main activities (and their main material and information flows), technologies, resources and organizations that contribute to the creation, transformation, distribution, marketing and supply of a finished product; in a more strict sense, it refers to the set of companies that compete in the supply chain of a given product. The term was coined by the French agronomist Louis Malassis. The first and broadest meaning also includes that series of controls on the origin and subsequent transformation of a product that guarantee its validity while protecting the intermediate and final safety
